Sheriff's Dept.

Three recent accidents were investigated by Putnam County Sheriff's Department deputies.

* At 6:21 a.m. Wednesday, Thomas A. Boller, 42, Greencastle, was southbound on U.S. 231 near County Road 800 South.

Boller told Deputy Adam Hull that he lost control of his 1999 Toyota Corolla on a patch of ice, causing him to slide off the road into a ditch.

Damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000.

* At 10:30 p.m., Todd J. Hawthorne, 34, Petersburg, was traveling on County Road 445 West near U.S. 40.

Hawthorne told Deputy Mike Downing he didn't have anything to say other than he wasn't the one that wrecked.

Downing said it appeared Hawthorne was southbound on County Road 445 West, when for some reason he was distracted and left the roadway at the sharp left turn just north of U.S. 40. His 2009 Chevrolet Silverado struck the Reelsville Water Authority sign, smashing it into several pieces, sideswiped an equipment trailer parked in the lot and returned to the roadway.

Hawthorne reportedly left the property-damage accident scene and fled west on U.S. 40.

Soon thereafter, Indiana State Trooper Ian Portteus made a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle at County Road 200 West and U.S. 40 in Clay County. When Downing arrived on the scene he observed Portteus talking to Hawthorne, advising him why he had been stopped.

Portteus also observed that the driver may have been intoxicated. Portteus asked him to exit his vehicle and take some field sobriety tests, Hawthorne obliged.

Downing stated that Portteus conducted his OWI investigation as he took pictures of the vehicle and gathered information. Hawthorne was charged with leaving the scene of a property-damage accident.

Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

* At 11:25 a.m. Thursday, Kurtis W. Belecher, 23, Coatesville, was westbound on County Road 350 North near County Road 775 East.

Belecher advised Deputy Hull that he hit a patch of ice, causing his 2007 Chevrolet Colorado to leave the roadway and slide into a creek.

Damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000.
