Sheriff's Dept.

* At 4:35 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 13, Merlin R. Oetken, 65, Cloverdale, was traveling eastbound on U.S. 40 at approximately 3974 West.

Oetken advised Sgt. Craig Sibbitt that he had possibly fallen asleep behind the wheel of his 2001 Chrysler Town and Country. Oetken's vehicle left the roadway on the south shoulder and entered a ditch, collided with a mailbox before coming to rest.

Damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000.

* At 4:30 p.m. Emily A. Parker, 19, Greencastle, was traveling westbound on County Road 125 South (West Walnut Street).

Parker advised Col. Tom Helmer that she observed a school bus turn right off of County Road 475 West to head east on County Road 125 South. Parker noted that she had turned to give something to her child, who was sitting in the back seat of the 2002 GM Envoy and when she turned around she observed a school bus entering County Road 125 South, from County Road 475 West, heading east, that appeared to be left-of-center.

It was noted that Parker applied her brakes, but lost control of the vehicle due to the ice covered roadway. The vehicle then spun around approximately 180 degrees sliding across the eastbound lane before exiting the travel portion of the roadway into a ditch, with the vehicle striking a rock wall on the south side of the road and coming to rest facing east.

There were no apparent injuries.

Damage was estimated at $1,001-$2,500.

* At 9:40 a.m. on Friday, Makayla R. Hettich, 17, Cloverdale was traveling southbound on County Road 1025 East attempting to turn left onto County Road 700 South.

Hettich advised Sibbitt that she was distracted while attempting to find the defroster control on her 2000 Nissan Pathfinder and while turning left, she didn't see Dixie R. Wilson, 75, Martinsville stopped at the intersection in a 2008 Toyota Prius Hybrid.

Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

* At 2:35 a.m. on Saturday, Andrew C. McGuire, 42, Greencastle, was traveling on County Road 300 North near County Rod 675 West.

McGuire advised Deputy Kyle Gibbons that he was operating his 1984 Ford F150 somewhere in the Clinton Falls area when, due to slippery road conditions, his vehicle lost traction in a curve and left the roadway. His vehicle then made front right impact into an embankment on the right side of the roadway, which caused the vehicle to roll over onto its top and slide into an adjacent ditch.

McGuire noted that because he was without a phone, he got a ride to his residence to report the accident.

Gibbons advised that McGuire's vehicle was later found in a corner just east of the intersection of County Road 675 West and County Road 300 North. His vehicle suffered heavy damage as a result of the accident. However, McGuire did not suffer serious injury as a result of the crash and declined further medical treatment.

Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

* At 10:05 a.m., Quates A. Brian, 21, Bainbridge, was traveling north on Heritage Drive when he entered a curve on a steep uphill upgrade.

Quates advised Reserve Officer Rick Lambert that he lost control of his 1993 Chevrolet Cavalier, crossed the centerline, left the roadway and came to rest in a ditch on the side of the road.

Lambert noted that at the time of the accident, the roadway was bathed in shadows which had not allowed the road frost to melt, which may have contributed to the accident. A review of tire marks at the scene, indicated that Quates had crossed the center line, slid into the ditchline running parallel to the roadway before hitting a tree. Upon impact, the vehicle, which sustained substantial damage to the right front side and front end, appeared to have spun 180 degrees and became mired in the snow and mud.

Lambert noted that the odor of an alcoholic beverage was detected on Quates. When asked if he had been drinking Quates indicated he had been consuming alcohol at a friends the previous evening where he had fallen asleep. Upon waking, Quates further stated that he left the friends residence to return to his home in Bainbridge.

Since the odor of an alcoholic beverage was noted on Quates, a portable breathalyzer test was given by Lt. Donnie Pettit, which indicated he may still be under the influence of alcohol.

Quates was then transported to the Putnam County Jail where he was given an additional breathalyzer test by Pettit, which tested 0.11 BAC. He was then booked into the Putnam County Jail and charged with operating while intoxicated.

Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.
