Inspection of a supposed disabled vehicle Friday morning just west of the Putnam-Clay county line turned into a drug investigation, Indiana State Police at Putnamville reported.

Evidence displayed by State Police after being taken from suspects during Interstate 70 heroin arrests Friday morning. Trooper's hat helps provide perspective on size of the items.

About 9:30 a.m., ISP Trooper Brandon Mullen came upon what he thought was a disabled vehicle along westbound Interstate 70 near the 29-mile marker, 12 miles west of Cloverdale.

Instead, as the officer approached the car, he reportedly found the driver, Tyler Jackson, 23, Terre Haute, in the act of injecting himself with heroin via a syringe.

Trooper Mullen removed Jackson and a female passenger, Shauna Sheets, 27, Terre Haute, from the vehicle and summoned assistance along with an ambulance due to the intoxication of the individuals and the severity of the drug.

Jackson reportedly had in his possession a syringe and spoon with a liquid substance.

Sheets was found to have in her possession nearly three grams of heroin in a plastic bag hidden in her undergarments.

Both individuals were checked out by emergency medical technicians and released to Trooper Mullen.

The two suspects were transported to Clay County Jail at Brazil on identical charges of possession of heroin and possession of paraphernalia.

All evidence field tested positive for heroin and will be sent to the Indiana State Lab for certification.

Assisting at the scene were Troopers Michael Wood and Yan Dravigne, along with CARE ambulance service personnel.
