Mary Gaitskill

Novelist Mary Gaitskill -- "well-known for narratives that touch on ostracism and taboo, often from the points of view of 'bad' women whose voices go unheard," as Slate noted -- will visit DePauw University on Wednesday, March 18. The author will present a 7:30 p.m. reading in the auditorium of the Richard E. Peeler Art Center (southwest corner of Indiana and Hanna streets) in an event presented by DePauw's James and Marilou Kelly Writers Series.

Gaitskill is the author of the novels "Two Girls, Fat and Thin" and "Veronica," as well as the story collections "Bad Behavior," "Because They Wanted To" and "Don't Cry."

Her story "Secretary" was the basis for the critically acclaimed 2002 feature film of the same name, which starred Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Gaitskill, who teaches creative writing at New York University, has received a Guggenheim Fellowship for fiction and "Veronica" was nominated for the National Book Award, National Critic's Circle Award and the Los Angeles Times Book Award.

Her stories and essays have appeared in the New Yorker, Harper's, Best American Short Stories and The O. Henry Prize Stories.

The James and Marilou Kelly Writers Series was established in 1998 with gifts from Marilou Morrell Kelly, a 1955 graduate of DePauw.
