Greencastle boys lose in overtime

NEW MARKET -- Four quarters was not enough to separate Greencastle and Southmont Friday night.

After trailing 15-8 in the first quarter, the Tiger Cubs eliminated the lead by the end of the third quarter, forced overtime and had a two-point lead, only to be cruelly cut down by a Camden Chadd buzzer-beating three, falling 43-42 to the Mounties.

Greencastle head coach Troy Greenlee said the team had to grind away with a stop-start offense but was still disappointed to lose.

"It was a game where we had to gut it out and Colyn Foxx made a great play to put us up two late," Greenlee said. "They were able to get the last-second three off and it went in.

"It was disappointing because I don't think we played real well. To have a chance to win it, and not win it, was disappointing as well."

Southmont got off to the better start, hitting three threes in the first quarter, including two in the last minute, to take a 15-8 lead after the opening period.

As the half progressed, however, the Mounties began to slow the play down to nearly minute-long possessions.

While the emphasis on each possession increased, it slowed down the hosts as Greencastle cut the lead to 22-19 after Adam Gerard sank a three and Brody Bollman scored the final basket of the half.

Though the Tiger Cubs cut the deficit by four in the second quarter, Greenlee felt the pace of the game hurt the team in the long run.

"I think (the slow pace) hurt us because we were never able to get into on offensive rhythm," Greenlee said. "It seemed like we could never put consecutive possessions together where we did some good things offensively.

"Because it was a low-possession game, it made very possession that much more important and when you're not in a rhythm offensively, the shots you do get are a little tighter."

After trading points in the opening minutes of the second half, Chadd hit a three to give Southmont a 29-23 lead.

Greencastle scored the final six points of the quarter on baskets from Ryan Coble, Gerard and Anthony Mitchell to tie the game at 29-29 heading into the final quarter of regulation.

Greenlee said the squad compensated for the lack of offensive fireGreenlee noted. "I'm not surprised with our guys because when they've gotten down, they've battled back."

Chadd hit another three to open the fourth before Mitchell and Bollman scored to give the Tiger Cubs their first lead of the game.

Kaleb Swick scored to regain the lead for the Mounties and Nathan Jent looked to have sealed the game with a three-point play, only to see Coble force overtime with two late baskets.

Colin York opened the extra period with a three, only to be answered by Chad's fourth three of the game.

With time winding down, Colyn Foxx drove to the basket and hit a jumper to give Greencastle a 42-40 lead with three seconds left.

But that was enough time for one more twist as Chadd became the hero with a fifth and final three to decide the contest as the horn sounded.

Greencastle will have a couple of days to mull over the loss before hosting Owen Valley next Tuesday and Greenlee said getting the team emotionally back up to speed will be a major priority.

"We had shots tonight, we just didn't hit them," Greenlee said. "The disappointing thing was that we played so well against Northview the other night and hit a lot of shots.

"I don't know why that doesn't transfer on to the next game but right now, we have to get ourselves feeling better after a game like this. We don't know a lot about Owen Valley right now but they're a tough team to play against.

"We're going to focus on ourselves for the next few days and see if we can't get back on track."
