William D. "Mac" McCormick, 70, of Crawfordsville, died on Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 7 a.m. at St. Vincent Hospital after a short illness.

He was born Nov. 12, 1944 to Roberta (Cottingham) Harper in Lafayette.

As a child, he resided in Pine Village and Lafayette and later moved to Greencastle when his father, Robert McCormick, opened the original Mac's Apparel for Men.

After graduating from Greencastle High School in 1963 and attending Indiana State University, he went to work in the family business.

In 1967 he moved to Crawfordsville to run the new store on Washington Street. Later, that same year he married Shirley A. Pepple in Jamestown.

For the next 37 years, he became a fixture in downtown Crawfordsville. He was involved in many civic organizations. Memberships included Lions Club, Kiwanis, Chamber of Commerce, and the Crawfordsville Country Club.

He also served as Montgomery County commissioner from 2001-2005. He was president of the Indiana Association of County Commissioners in 2006, while also serving as district president for the Association of Indiana Counties.

He was currently employed with CPI Supply of Bedford as a sales representative, which he thoroughly enjoyed.

Mac enjoyed golf and loved nothing better than to take a buck from one of his golfing buddies. Mac's boundless energy touched everyone that knew him.

In addition to his passion for his work and community, he was also passionate about his family. He was a devoted husband, son, father, and Pappy. He loved nothing more than entertaining his grandchildren in his own backyard. Many an afternoon was passed with him riding his lawn tractor with either a grandchild on his lap, or all of them in a wagon behind.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Shirley; his mother, Roberta McCormick of Greencastle; his son, Robert (Stacy) of Waynetown; his daughter, Annie (Tim) Sears of Atlanta; and his four grandchildren, Kortne, Izzy, Ben and Kami.
