Next senior food giveaway set for March 12 at Armory

Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana has scheduled another Senior Mobile Pantry event for Putnam County residents age 55 and older on Thursday, March 12.

Gleaners Mobile Pantry coordinator Sloan Shockley displays one of the peach raspberry pies Gleaners was giving away during its first Putnam County effort last fall. Gleaners now plans to have a Greencastle area food giveaway for seniors (age 55 and older) every month through June.

The latest venture is slated for next Thursday at the National Guard Armory (northeast corner of Arlington Street and Shadowlawn Avenue in Greencastle), beginning with registration at 10 a.m. The program will end at noon.

Gleaners is again partnering with the Putnam County Emergency Food Pantry.

In fact, Putnam County Food Emergency Food Pantry Director Judy Miller announced that Gleaners now plans to conduct a food giveaway in Greencastle "every month through June."

That is the end of the fiscal year for Gleaners, she explained. At that point the Putnam County program will be re-evaluated by Gleaners.

The last event at the Armory on Feb. 19 served 111 households and more than 200 individuals, Miller said.

"It's great food, we had a great giveaway," Miller added. "Come get your food."

To receive food, residents must present an ID offering proof of age and residency. Participants are asked to bring their own bags or boxes to hold the food.

All persons are asked to use the front door of the Armory (facing Arlington Street) due to trucks and vehicles parked in the rear.

Seniors must come in person in order to receive food. There will be no substitute pick-up for those unable to attend themselves.
