CSNY tribute to benefit The Castle

Sunday, March 8, 2015

Folk rockers and those who can (or can't) remember Woodstock can hear some favorites Tuesday at Chief's restaurant in Greencastle.

Local musicians will present a Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young tribute from 7-9 p.m., with proceeds benefiting The Castle.

The show is the brainchild of Chris Wurster and Bobbie Lancaster. It came about during a meeting last fall, with Lancaster asking, "Wouldn't it be cool to do a CSNY tribute?"

During a January Elvis tribute at Chief's -- another Castle benefit -- Wurster mentioned the idea to owner Steve Gaebes, who was onboard. He then began planning with Lancaster and The Castle executive director Beth Benedix.

"This appealed to me because I've been playing these songs since they first came out, so that dates me," Wurster said. "They're so much fun to play and I love singing harmony. And we've got some great people in this show."

Wurster and Lancaster will be joined by Tony Harmless, Mike Van Rensselaer, Mike Stiver, Steve "Bulldog" Johnson and Clifford Gammon.

The lineup will shift throughout the evening, with a number of collaborations taking form.

"Harmony's really important to Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and that's one of the things I really like about their music," Wurster said. "We're going to be doing lots of duos, trios and more people singing together, especially on the finale."

The show does not coincide with any CSNY birthday or anniversary.

"It was just a good idea that people seemed to respond to," Wurster said. "It's great music and music that a lot of people like to sing and play, and also hear."

The evening will also be packed with music, with plans to do 20 songs.

"We may not do everybody's favorite CSNY song but we're going to make up for it with a lot of Neil Young," Wurster said.

The Castle is a non-profit organization that works with teachers and schools to integrate arts into the existing curriculum middle school and high school classes in Greencastle schools. The organization partners with local businesses each month to help raise funds and promote a sense of community.

"This is a benefit for Castle Arts. We really appreciate Chief's supporting that," Wurster said. "We hope people come out and support that program that does such great things for the schools."

Chief's is located at 5 E. Franklin St.
