UPDATE: Cataract woman dies when vehicle overturns in pond
CLOVERDALE -- An Owen County woman died Monday morning in a single-vehicle accident in Cloverdale Township.
Robbin Thron, 45, Cataract, was pronounced dead at Putnam County Hospital after her body was recovered from a pond in which her 2004 Jeep Liberty had overturned.
Capt. Tom Helmer of the Putnam County Sheriff's Department said investigators believe Thron hit a patch of black ice as she was eastbound on State Road 42, approaching the curve at County Road 1200 South.
The SUV then traveled across both lanes of traffic, hitting an earthen embankment, which caused the vehicle to become airborne. The vehicle came down on its top in the pond.
Officers were dispatched to the scene about 9 a.m., and found the vehicle overturned in the water, but could not locate a driver.
Indiana Conservation officers were called to the incident, with a team of three divers spending two hours in the icy water before Thron's body was recovered at 11:40 a.m.
Providing additional support at the scene were deputies Gregg Slover, Donnie Pettit and Josh Boller, Cloverdale Town Marshal Mike Clark, Indiana State Trooper Mike Wood, Cloverdale Township Volunteer Fire Department and Putnam County Operation Life.
Thron had worked in the cafeteria at Eminence Schools.
