Greencastle's softball team defended its home field again Monday evening, this time against its Putnam County rival Cougars in a 6-3 win.

North Putnam (0-3) managed to get some scoring early in the first inning. After freshman Chloe LaPierre singled to get on and senior Morgan Albers put her in scoring position with a double, junior Reilly Tucker knocked them both in with a double.

Greencastle (2-0) responded in a big way. Senior Courtney Adams singled and sophomore Regan Keller walked. With two on base junior Rachel Dozier pelted a Sabrina Surber pitch into the stands for a three-run shot.

"It was pretty important," Dozier said. "It helped in boosting our morale. It was low and outside and that's my hotspot."

North Putnam tried to retake the lead but was unable to get its runners across the plate. The Lady Cougars went scoreless for four innings while GHS scored in the third on an error.

"We're putting the bat on the ball," Cougar coach Benny Ault said. "There are just too many popflys. We need to swing more level. We've very young this year. We have a lot of freshman starting. Routine errors are going to cost us. Every time we have an error a run scores. That's how they scored three of their six runs."

With the lead intact Greencastle used two more big hits by Keller and junor Kenlee Johnson to score two more runners.

"I've got a good team," GHS coach Dave Keller said. "They come out hitting the ball. Sabrina is Sabrina. We've known her for four years now. She throws hard and hits her spots, but our girls have some confidence now."

North Putnam scored Clair Sims on a Kaleigh Storm RBI with two outs in the sixth but the Cougars were unable to get Sims home from third and they went three-up and three-down to end the game.

North Putnam actually outhit the Tiger Cubs but were unable to plate its runners. Surber recorded nine strikeouts with five hits.

GHS' Skyler Hensley struck out five allowing seven hits.

Due to rain the second game that was scheduled for Tuesday was postponed and next on Greencastle's schedule is a home game against Edgewood on Thursday.

North Putnam will take on Eminence on Thursday at home.
