Greencastle and North Putnam's baseball teams played two games Monday and GHS took both wins first 6-4 and then 9-6.

North Putnam's baseball team was coming off of a big doubleheader sweep against Eminence and was looking to carry that momentum over to Greencastle.

However fatigue played a factor as the teams decided to play both their games Monday night to avoid the possibility of a rain out Tuesday.

The first game was fueled by two big offensive innings on both sides before defense took over.

GHS senior Levi Lewis got the ball rolling with a double in the second inning. From there the Tiger Cubs rattled off all six of their runs, helped along by some stolen bases from senior Ichiro Mozawa and sophomore Noah Cook and some wild pitches from North Putnam (2-2).

Five of those runs came with two outs.

North Putnam responded with a big third inning when sophomore Max Haste recorded a single and four walks helped him score. Junior Booby Scheele used a single to knock in Jackson Kendall and Kaine Benge and Daniel Huffman scored another runner with an RBI.

However that was the extent of the offense in game one as pitching halted the scoring allowing Greencastle to take the 6-4 win.

"We seem to bounce back well," Cougar coach Brian Jeter said. "Tomorrow we will let this roll off our shoulders. They are young enough that they don't hold on to it forever."

Huffman had three hits in game one and Benge threw seven strikeouts for North Putnam. Greencastle junior Anthony Rossok had six strikeouts.

The second game began in North Putnam's favor when they scored four runs in the first two innings. An RBI by Benge led the way but the Cougars were unable to score again until the fifth inning.

"This team just doesn't give up," GHS coach Troy Remsburg said. "We got down in the second game and they kept the same demeanor the whole game. They didn't get upset about it. We had a lot of key hits from younger guys today and that's a plus for the team."

For Greencastle Tanner Nicholson crossed home in the third inning, after a Kaleb Fleming sacrifice fly and an error on the Trey Scanland hit. The Tiger Cubs scored again in the fourth when Brett Sosebee, running for Mozawa, scored.

After sophomore Trey Scanland and Rossok got on base via two singles in the top of the fifth, senior Ryley Cook scored them both with a double RBI.

North Putnam managed two more runs on a passed ball in the fifth inning however couldn't manage another run in the final two innings.

"We're young and we made a lot of mistakes," Jeter said. "We only have one senior. We had four injuries tonight. We started with 14 players and ended with ten."

GHS, on the other hand, scored five more runs to close out the night. The Tiger Cubs took advantage of a fatigued Cougar team and advanced their runners in a variety of ways. A passed ball scored both Nicholson and Fleming and Noah Cook scored both in the sixth and seventh inning to keep the lead secure.

Greencastle had a great game from the mound, with five strikeouts coming from both Nicholson and Scanland.

North Putnam will not get much time to rest as the Cougars will play Thursday at home against Turkey Run.

Greencastle will get a break and will not play until Saturday when it travels to Brown County.
