CLOVERDALE--The Cloverdale Clovers' softball team hosted the South Putnam Eagles in a double header Monday night after rainy weather was spotted in the forecast for Tuesday. That pushed Tuesday's game into a Monday double header. The Clovers won both outings, 13-4 and 17-4.

"I was really pleased with how we played tonight," Clovers' coach Jim Spencer said. "We made a few mental errors, but no physical errors. We're just trying to play basic fast pitch."

"I think we had a lot of nerves and jitters to start," Eagles' coach Roshia Sullivan said. "I thought the way we kept fighting made me pretty proud."

The Clovers had 11 hits in the first game and 16 hits in the second game. Senior Jessica Winders went 3-for-5 for the night and scored all three times she got on base. Sophomore pitcher Lauren Meek did the same thing as Winders.

"We kept hitting the ball well," Spencer said. "We've got some good hitters and we ran the bases well. We were smart on the bases. We mostly made the right plays in the field. This is all for our first game."

The Eagles did have nine hits in the second game and 12 in the first game. Coach Sullivan was also very happy with how her team responded in the outfield.

"I thought that everybody put the ball in play," Sullivan said. "There weren't really any holes. We're a very young team, so I was happy with that. I was initially worried with our outfield and they did amazing tonight. Everyone just picked each other up tonight."

Cloverdale has nine players on its varsity roster that are sophomores and younger. Those players seen a significant amount of time on the field and coach Spencer was pleased with their output.

"I was really pleased with the younger players," Spencer said. "That just comes with a lot of preparation."

Cloverdale's big inning in the second game came in the sixth when they scored 12 runs to set up the ten run rule on South Putnam. All the hitters in the Cloverdale lineup managed to get on base at some point in the inning. The Eagles failed to score and the game ended.
