Wittenberg too much for DPU

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- Wittenberg's consistent offensive attack was too much for the DePauw men's lacrosse team as the host Tigers seized a 17-6 victory Wednesday afternoon at Edwards-Maurer Field.

DePauw dropped to 5-7 on the year and 1-4 in North Coast Athletic Conference action, while Wittenberg moved to 6-5 overall and 4-2 in the league.

Wittenberg struck early and often in the opening half, outscoring DePauw 9-1. Ryan Spitzer scored three of the Tigers' first five goals and Lewis Thompson had two first-half assists.

Andrew Wright tallied DePauw's lone goal with 1:46 left in the first quarter on an assist from Sam Alkema. Wright netted his second goal with 6:58 left in the third on Kyle Roberts' assist.

Ben Sherman scored the Tigers' third goal on an assist from Nick Woerner with 5:04 on the clock. Benton Givens and Grant Skipper would both tack on unassisted goals in the third, closing out the quarter with the Tigers trailing 13-5.

Wright would wrap up the DePauw scoring on an assist from Roberts with 14:46 remaining in the fourth. Joe Musto made 14 saves in a losing effort.

Wittenberg was led by Spitzer with four goals, while Andrew Fuss, Thomas Fuss and Thompson each added two goals. Jay Dolan picked up the win with four saves in goal.

The host Tigers held a 52-16 shot advantage and committed 16 turnovers, while forcing 24. Wittenberg committed three infraction for three minutes of penalty time and DePauw had four penalties for four minutes.

Jack Gomez led the Tigers with five ground balls, while Sherman added four. Grant Skipper won 11 faceoffs in the defeat.

DePauw's next contest is Saturday, April 11, when they travel to Hiram College for a 1 p.m. conference tilt.
