Eagles split doubleheader Saturday

South Putnam almost walked away with the sweep when the Eagles' traveled to North Central in Farmersburg but just missed out in the last inning of the second game.

In game one, the Eagles scored in all but two innings and held North Central to only three runs in a 13-3 rout.

Offense was the order of the day during the second game. Nineteen hits on both sides mixed with minimal errors led to a 17-16 South Putnam loss.

The first game saw the Eagles in complete control. The scored two and the five in the first two innings and the Thunderbirds could only manage two in each. South Putnam then held North Central scoreless until the seventh inning where it scored its last run. Grady McHugh pitched five innings and threw six strikeouts on the day. The Eagles commited no errors in the first game.

South Putnam's offensive game meanwhile, benefited from Jake Caricheal's seven RBIs and Jacob Schroer's four quality at bats.

South Putnam scored two in the fourth, one in the sixth and three in the seventh to secure its win.

The Eagles had the advantage early in the second game scoring three in the first inning and four in the third while only giving up one run in the third inning.

However big innings by the opponent have been an Achille's heel for South Putnam and North Central scored four in the fifth inning, one in the sixth and five in the seventh.

South scored four in the fifth and with the score tied at 11 the game went into extra innings.

Each team scored two in the eighth inning and South Putnam managed three runs in the ninth. However North Central scored four in the ninth inning and it walked away with the win.

South Putnam is back in action on Monday against Cascade.
