Legislative Visitation

Wednesday, April 22, 2015
Delta Kappa Gamma sisters from various area chapters gathered on April 15 to lobby the Indiana State Legislature. Those attending were Marti Daily, Roni Embry, Rosemary Moore, Kim Fidler, Jet Sundheimer, Anita Vernon, Ruth Simmons, Sarah Ellcessor, Sherry Watkins and Ellen Bernstein. The productive visit began with a briefing at the ISTA building where several education bills were discussed. Of particular concern was Senate Bill 1, the measure that would remove State Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz as State Board of Education chairman and allow the board to elect its own chairman annually. The bill would also allow the board to elect a vice chairman. Another bill of concern is House Bill 1001, the State Budget and School Funding Formula bill, which has been debated as heavily invested in voucher and charter school funding at the expense of traditional public schools while a change in the complexity index could also be detrimental to traditional public schools. DKG members then went to the Statehouse to speak to legislators about the bills with lunch served at the Statehouse. (Courtesy photo)
