Incumbent First Ward City Councilor Adam Cohen, 53, of 11 Park St., is seeking re-election on the Democrat ticket in the May 5 primary.

Cohen, who is the current president of the Greencastle City Council, said he is "proud of the city" he calls home and believes public service is "a responsibility to one's community."

Before seeking election, he coached many community children in summer baseball programs.

In addition, when Big Walnut Sports Park was in need of new leadership, Cohen stepped up and served as president for more than 10 years. In his term as president, he was able to secure more than $100,000 in grants for the park.

Cohen said he is "committed to improving the quality of life for the residents of the First Ward and all of Greencastle."

As a councilor he has served as the president of the Council for seven straight years. He is proud to note that his election to the presidency has always been characterized by crossing party lines. He believes the key to effective city government is consensus building and proudly points out the fact that in his term there has never been a party-line vote.

As a councilor, Cohen served on the executive committee for the Stellar Grant and has pushed for funding to remove unsafe buildings from the community. He views the "continued development of the downtown as key to continuing the city's growth."

As a coach, teacher and staff member of DePauw University's Center for Spiritual Life, Cohen sees "public service as part of a commitment to the service of others and a natural extension" of his love of Greencastle.
