North Putnam, Cloverdale golf teams improving
CLOVERDALE -- Cloverdale's golf team responded from its outing at Danville where Clover coach Doug Wokoun was not impressed. However the Clovers bounced back against Shakamak at home with 187 strokes to the Lakers' incomplete score.
"Rylan (Mattocks) played extremely well, and was able to overcome the conditions very well," Wokoun said. "Zach Nichols took a big step forward with his play, which we hope will just continue to improve as we go from here. Kylar Galloway had a couple of blips, but overall was pretty solid."
The winds as strong as they could be Monday but Wokoun felt his team handled the conditions as well as possible.
"Drew Boyette is stepping up and making solid contributions. He is continuing to improve and become more consistent," Wokoun said. "Freddy struggled a little, but he had some good shots and just needs to put things together at one time. Chase is kind of in the same place, hitting some good shots but not finding the consistency that we know he has."
The North Putnam golf team finished as the top Putnam County team in fifth place at the Danville Invitational on Saturday.
With a score of 334 the Cougars came in just ahead of Fishers who had 339. Winning the event was Brownsburg with 302.
North Putnam performed well amongst some larger schools and tough competition.Jake Holtze was the lowest Cougar with 79. Danny Smith carded an 82. Austin Judy notched an 85 and completing the team scorecard with an 88 was Logan Grim.
Cloverdale finished 12th with 371.
"We are very disappointed by our outing Saturday," Wokoun said. "I did not do a very good job of preparing our guys. We made some really good shots during the round, but we were unable to sustain the level of play we believe we are capable of.
"Everyone did some good things, and in spite of our difficulties, our guys made every effort to compete until the end."
