Clovers beat undefeated Edgewood
ELLETTSVILLE -- Cloverdale's baseball team earned a solid win over Edgewood Thursday. The Mustangs who came into the game with a 10-1 record were thwarted by Cloverdale's late surge as the Clovers won 5-4.
"A really nice win for Cloverdale over previously undefeated Edgewood on the road," CHS coach Jim Spencer said. "Lauren Meek pitched a smart game and the defense made a lot of nice plays against some really well hit balls by Edgewood. Offensively, we were able to get some runs across with walks, sacrifices, and some well-timed hits."
The Clovers were down early when Edgewood score three runs in the first two innings and Cloverdael could only manage one.
However Meek's pitching as well as the Clover defense stifled the Mustangs for four straight innings. After four score less innings themselves, Cloverdale earned some big runs in the sixth and seventh to give themselves the lead.
"Kim Winders hit a big home run (her fourth on the season) after Kelsey Helterbrand drew a two-out walk in the top of the sixth to tie the game," Spencer Said. "Jess Winders laid down a bunt in the top of the seventh to move runners up to second and third. Lauren Meek scored on a passed ball and Hannah Long scored on a deep sacrifice fly by Maddy Smith to go up 5-3.
Cloverdale now sitting at 6-2 will have to prepare for double duty against the Cadets as it will face its conference fival Monday and Tuesday.
