Eagle track, field runs with the Patriots at home
Earlier this week South Putnam's girls' track team outpaced Owen Valley for a win. The girls' took the victory 86-45. The Eagle boys' had a tougher time and lost the meet 48-84.
"I was pleased with a few performances," SPHS boys coach Brian Gardener said. "Timmy Parker doubled up in winning the 200 and the long jump. It was a personal best this year in both."
Personal bests weren't the only thing that Gardener enjoyed seeing from his team this year.
"Our 4x800 team ran very well of Freeman, Vittetow, Crossman, Vandermark. They ran very well with no one pushing them. We had several runners and throwers have there best performance of the year with us running through the meets. Joe Masters won the shot put and Jake Lorimer won the pole vault."
The SPHS boys coach Dave Welti enjoyed his team's success including his senior leaders as well as his younger runners.
"Senior Ariel Higgins led the way with three first-place finishes as an individual, and she was part of the first-place 1600m relay team," Welti said. "She jumped a season best in the long jump with very little practice over the past few weeks, so we're really pleased with that.
His team's future success is looking good considering the number of first-place finishes from a freshman Eagle.
"Freshmen Ally Nichols had an outstanding night, getting her first two first-place finishes as an individual in a high school meet," Welti continued. "She ran really well, winning the 400m and 200m, and she was also a member of the winning 1600m Relay team. With her only being a freshmen, I'm really happy with the way she goes into each race with confidence and a desire to compete."
The Eagles competed at Monrovia Thursday night but the results were too late for publication. The Eagles will next be at home to run with Monrovia.
