Three Putnam County winners in poetry competition

Art Spaces Inc. and the Indiana State University Community School of the Arts have announced the winners of the 2015 Max Ehrmann Poetry Competition.

Two Putnam County high school students are among those selected, Colin Dombrowski, Greencastle, and Lillian Boyd, Cloverdale, while Elianna Boyd of Cloverdale Elementary School was a elementary school winner.

Theme of this year's poetry competition was "This Corner of the World."

The contest saw 162 poems received from 115 people with the competition being adjudicated by Donald Platt, a published author, poet and teacher.

Overall the 2015 winners are:

Adult winners -- Mark Minster (Terre Haute), grand prize; Cole Hardman (Terre Haute), second prize; and Nicole Bailey (Terre Haute), third prize.

High school winners -- Colin Dombrowski (Greencastle High School), Lillian Boyd (Cloverdale High School) and Madison King (South Vigo High School).

Middle school winners -- Addeline Moeller (Otter Creek Middle School), Jason Parsons (Rural Community Academy) and MacKenzie Slawson (Rural Community Academy).

Elementary school winners -- Braydon Killion (Devaney Elementary School), Elianna Boyd (Cloverdale Elementary School) and Ernest Cooley (Rural Community Academy).

Meanwhile, Michael Lunsford (Rosedale) received the Art Spaces Choice Award and Divya Ramesh (Terre Haute) received the ISU Community School of the Arts Award.

The awards ceremony honoring the winners was Monday, April 27 at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College. Winners read their poems and Dr. Platt read from his own works.

Awards included cash prizes and gift certificates to Barnes & Noble at ISU. The winning poems remain on display at Vigo County Public Library in honor of National Poetry Month.

The 2015 Max Ehrmann Poetry Competition was sponsored by St. Mary-of-the-Woods College with additional support from Arts Illiana, Big Picture, Center for Community Engagement at Indiana State University, Creative Writing Committee of the Indiana State University Department of English, Downtown Terre Haute Inc., River Wools, Vigo County Historical Society and Wise Pies.
