IHSAA realignment has largest effect on Tiger Cub hoops, Eagle football

Tuesday, May 5, 2015

New 2015-16 sectional assignments for eight team sports, approved Monday by the IHSAA Executive Committee, have a limited effect on Putnam County teams, with the most prominent being on both Greencastle High School basketball programs and the South Putnam football team.

The realignment featured no class reassignments for local teams, with Greencastle remaining in Class 3A, North Putnam and Cloverdale remaining in Class 2A and South Putnam in 2A in all but football, where the Eagles remain in Class 1A.

The only exception to these classifications is boys' and girls' soccer, where both Greencastle and North Putnam are in Class 1A of the two-class format.

As for the individual sectionals, the most obvious changes are for Greencastle boys' and girls' basketball and volleyball as well as South Putnam football, all of which will be heading north for their sectionals next year.

The GHS basketball and volleyball teams are now assigned to Sectional 25, which aligns them with most of the teams in the Sagamore Conference: Crawfordsville, Frankfort, Lebanon, North Montgomery, Tri-West and Western Boone.

These teams have most recently competed in a sectional that looked toward Indianapolis, with teams such as Danville, Beech Grove, Indian Creek and Tri-West (which will be moving along with Greencastle).

Eagle football will now be in the far-flung Class A Sectional 45 which stretches from Vermillion County in the northwest, Hamilton County in the northeast and Putnam County in the south.

The complete list of combatants in football Sectional 45 includes Covenant Christian, Fountain Central, North Vermillion, Riverton Parke, Rockville, Sheridan, South Putnam and Turkey Run.

The rest of the Putnam County teams largely remain in their previous sectionals, although some other teams have been added and subtracted. Notable among these are the additions of heavyweights Bishop Chatard and Guerin Catholic to Greencastle's Class 3A football sectional and the departure of Speedway and Covenant Christian from a number of the local Class 2A sectionals.

Sites for these sectionals have not been announced.
