North Putnam splits with Cascade

ROACHDALE--After getting a win on the road Monday night at Cascade, the North Putnam Cougars fell to the Cadets at home Tuesday night, 10-0.

After surrendering only one run in the first inning the Cougars played well defensively. They did not allow another run until the fourth inning, but the fourth ended with the ultimate punch.

"To start the ball game we didn't have our starters in," Coach Brian Jeter said. "We played the first nine guys that got in the dugout. We got in a hole because our team did not come to play tonight."

Cascade piled nine runs in the inning on only six base hits. All the batters in the lineup scored except for pitcher Nate Stonebraker.

"In the fourth inning we hadn't gotten all of our starters in," Jeter said. "They were out of position and Cascade still hit the ball and put it in play and we just didn't make the plays. Cascade really hit the ball hard and that's the difference tonight."

The Cougars could not answer and despite a one-two-three inning in the top half of the fifth pitched by sophomore Jack Kendall the game ended after five.

Stonebraker had a dominant night on the mound. He threw a one-hitter only to junior Bobby Scheele who singled in the fourth inning. He also had 10 strikeouts over 17 batters faced.

The Cougars are a young ball club and they have been playing well as of late including a 5-4 loss to a very good Lebanon team Saturday. Jeter thinks his team can keep learning and getting better. He enjoys working with them.

"This team is either in it or out of it," Jeter said. "When we're in it, I believe we have some of the best bats around. We really score and put the ball in play. When we are not ready to play they come out and show two different teams. That's just because we're young. From the beginning of the year they have really gotten better."
