Eagle track flies against Rockville

South Putnam's track team well against Rockville at home Monday. The boys won with a score of 94-27 while the Lady Eagles also dominated 96-23.

"On the girls' side, we used this meet was a workout," Brandon Welti said. "Quite a few girls were running different events than what they would usually run, and there were still quite a few pleasant surprises. Jessica Jones, our 800-meter runner, ran a solid 100-meter and won. Angel Nield wanted to try the 300-meter hurdles and finished a close second to Blaze Bottorff. It was really fun to watch those two compete against each other, and I think they both had fun with it."

The boys saw many first place victories from the usual suspects like Oliviero Vurro, who won first in three events including the 300 and 110 hurdles, and Joey Masters who took victories in both the shot put and the discus.

The Eagle boys also got wins from Berent Freeman, Kieffer Vittetow and Jacob Lorimer.

Welti felt the Eagle ladies' success is to be expected due to the focus of the athletes.

"Ariel Higgins and Ally Nichols both had difficult workouts during the meet," Welti said. "We had them run in the 3200-meter relay, and both of them ran excellent splits despite not being mid-distance runners. Really, at this point in the year, I'm no longer surprised when they run well. Ariel and Ally are a lot alike, and they both expect themselves to be competitive and good no matter what events they are competing in. Watching the two of them battle in the 400 and 200 was a lot of fun, and I think they both really benefited from that."

SPHS has one more meet this week on Wednesday at Tri-West, and Welti believes he may scale the team's workouts back to keep his squad rested for the championship rounds.
