Clover golf wins three-way with Eagles, Bruins

Wednesday, May 6, 2015

PITTSBORO - The Cloverdale golf team had a good outing at Quail Creek coming out victorious, over Tri-West and South Putnam.

The Clovers had 174 strokes to Tri-Wests 190 and South Putnam's 206.

"This was our first experience with the back nine at Quail Creek and for the most part I thought we handled it pretty well," CHS coach Doug Wokoun said. "There was a terrific storm just north of us, which we could see during the match, and the changing temperature and wind conditions made things a little challenging."

The storm in the distance didn't faze medalist Rylan Mattocks too much as he put in the work to score 40.

Cloverdale's Kylar Galloway had the second best score of the match with 42 and Freddy Fislar notched a 44, the third-best score of the night.

"Rylan had two little blips, but otherwise had a very solid round," Wokoun said. "Kylar likewise had a couple of hiccups, but his round was very good. Freddy got a couple of tough bounces in places that were pretty important, but I was pleased with his effort."

Chase Snyder finished better than most of the completion at 48 and Zach Nichols rounded out the team's score at 63.

"Chase bounced back pretty well from a really tough round on Saturday and played most of the round pretty well," Wokoun said. "Zach had some struggles and there are some things we need to get fixed in his game over the next few days.

I felt like we took a positive step in this match, and have given ourselves something to build on as the next 10 days provide some tough challenges," Wokoun continued. "Our trip Thursday includes one of the top teams in the state, and WCC is coming up on Saturday."

Cloverdale (7-3) travels to Phil Harris in LInton on Thursday to play Sullivan, Owen Valley and White River Valley.
