CLOVERDALE -- On May 28 the Cloverdale boys' golf team invited WCC rivals Cascade and South Putnam to Clover Meadows for a late-season 18-hole match. Cascade got the best of the match shotting a 338. Cloverdale took second with 436 and the Eagles claimed third with 417.

Shooting an 82 was Cloverdale's Freddy Fislar, who earned the third-best score of the match and the best of the Putnam County school.

"Freddy had a really heroic round," CHS coach Doug Wokoun said. "He hurt his back on the sixth hole, and finished the front with a 39. He dropped off a little on the back nine, but he gave a great effort and persevered through all the discomfort. I was really proud of his effort and determination, let alone the score he was able to post."

The Clovers have one more match scheduled at Terre Haute South on Wednesday before their sectional match at Martinsville on Friday and Wokoun said some of his Clovers are looking good at the right point in the season.

"Chase (Snyder) has suddenly started to find his game, and it is coming at a very good time. He had a few rough spots, but this was one of his finer efforts as a Clover, and we are very pleased that he is starting to find his game," Wokoun said.

"Zach (Nichols) and Zarek (Wellington) both played well, and are getting things in order at the right time. They both left strokes on the course, but they are cutting down on the mistakes. They are gaining valuable experience and making good strides."

Even though Kylar Galloway didn't shoot as well as the team wanted, Wokoun wasn't too worried about Galloway's momentum. Galloway was one of CHS' strongest golfers this season.

"Kylar had a very atypical effort, and we were disappointed with his day," Wokoun said. "However, we also know that he will bounce back and become an important part of what we are trying to accomplish. He just had one of those days that everyone has once in a while."

South Putnam's young team will get one more crack before its sectional tournament at Crawfordsville on Saturday.

The Eagles will face its county rival in Greencastle at Windy Hill Tuesday.

South Putnam has no seniors and the Eagles will surely enjoy the experienced gained over the weekend.
