Mooresville man identified as I-70 accident victim

Two people are recovering in local hospitals and one person is dead after a crash on Interstate 70 late Saturday night in Morgan County.

At approximately 11:06 p.m., Indiana State Police troopers were dispatched to the 55-mile marker (approximately four miles west of State Road 39 and 14 miles east of the Cloverdale exit) on the report of a personal-injury accident involving a vehicle traveling the wrong way on the interstate.

Preliminary investigation reveled that a 2005 Chevrolet Impala, operated by Christopher Sweet, 35, of Mooresville, was eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-70.

The Impala ran head-on into a westbound 2007 Freightliner semi-tractor trailer driven by Sahal Jama, 27, of Columbus, Ohio, authorities said.

The car erupted in flames and although Sweet was pulled from the wreckage by good samaritans and life-saving measures were attempted, he was pronounced dead at the scene by the Morgan County Coroner's Office.

Jama was transported to Methodist Hospital at Indianapolis and his passenger, Mohamed Ali, 37, also of Columbus, Ohio, was taken to Eskenazi Hospital. Both were in critical condition.

Westbound lanes of I-70 were closed and traffic diverted to SR 39 while the crash was investigated and wreckage cleared.

Troopers do not know at this time why Sweet was operating in the wrong lanes and the investigation is continuing.

Investigating officers are Trooper Shaun Rawlins and Sgt. David Cox of the Indiana State Police.
