Apartments damaged in Reelsville fire

REELSVILLE -- A small apartment building was damaged in a Saturday morning fire.

At 3:19 a.m., the Reelsville Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to 6281 W. CR 750 South.

Reelsville Engine 56 arrived at 3:30 a.m. to find a four-unit apartment building with heavy fire coming from one apartment. Fire had also gotten into the common attic space shared by all four apartments.

All occupants had gotten out before responders arrived.

The fire spread through the common attic and affected all four apartments.

The fire was out by 5 a.m. and all units cleared the scene by 10 a.m. Approximately 8,000 gallons of water was used to extinguish the fire.

Two occupants were taken to St. Vincent Clay Hospital emergency room for checkout due to smoke inhalation. They were treated and released.

The building sustained an estimated $75,000 in damages with $20,000 damage to contents.

All occupants were assisted by the Red Cross.

One cat perished in the blaze.

Agencies assisting included Greencastle, Madison Township, Cloverdale Township, Van Buren (Clay County), Jackson Township (Clay County) and Poland fire departments, as well as Operation Life, Putnam County Sheriff's Department and Duke Energy.
