Smith Albert Solomon was born March 26, 1921 in Floyd Township, Putnam County.

He was the only child of Ren and Vergie Solomon. He spent eight years at Floyd Center School and four years at Bainbridge School Class of 1939.

Albert lived his entire life in Floyd Township except four years in the United States Air Force. He trained at the 614 Air Force in Eglin Field, Florida. He was discharged with the rank of T/SGT at Lowery Air Force Base in Colorado.

He raised turkeys and Hereford cattle.

He and first wife Mary June (Reising) built and operated the Daire-Ette in Bainbridge. He also was co-owner of Wilderness Antiques.

He served as treasurer of the Bainbridge P.T.O.; Floyd Township trustee; Putnam County assessor, four terms; twice elected state treasurer of the Indiana Assessors Association; Republican County chairman for eight years; delegate to the State GOP Convention eight times; six years with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles as supervisor.

He was named a Sagamore of the Wabash by Gov. Otis Bowen and Gov. Robert Orr.

He was past member of the American Legion, Farm Bureau, Kiwanis Club and Moose Lodge, all of Greencastle.

His first wife, Mary June, died in 1958. He later married Mattie Roberts, who died in 2008.

A daughter, Sherry, died in 1994 and son Greg died 2013.

He is survived by daughter Marsha Carrington of Bainbridge, two grandchildren, five great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 12 at the Bainbridge Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home, Greencastle, has been entrusted with the arrangements.
