Kids' Concert in new 'Music on the Square' space Saturday morning

Thursday, June 11, 2015

Local musicians James "Figgy" Hardwick, Bobbie Lancaster and Mike Van Rensselaer will perform a special free Kids' Concert Saturday, June 13 co-presented by the Greencastle Summer Music Festival and the DePauw University School of Music in the new "Music on the Square" space at 21 N. Indiana St. in downtown Greencastle.

New sign for M2 Music on the Square hangs above the sidewalk on the east side of the square in Greencastle.

The first public event in the space since Monday's ribbon-cutting ceremony with Yo-Yo Ma will also include short piano performances by Greencastle High School sophomore Amy Gong and recent GHS grad Taylor Secrest (who will be entering college this fall at Rose-Hulman), both of whom study with piano teacher Maureen Carkeek in the DePauw School of Music's Preparatory Department.

The free 11 a.m. concert coincides with the last hour of Saturday morning's Farmers' Market.

"Music on the Square is the most recent step in the School of Music's many efforts to bring our faculty and students off campus and into the community as part of our 21st-century Musician initiative, and the festival's motto is 'bringing the community together with friends making music for friends,'" explained festival founder Eric Edberg, the Cassel Grubb University Professor at DePauw.

"As the festival and the School of Music each expand our efforts to enhance the quality of life in Putnam County, I'm delighted that we can work together to present this special event," Edberg added. "This is also a great opportunity for folks to come in and see the dramatic transformation of what was the old Goodwill store into a one of the most beautiful spaces in Greencastle."

The Greencastle Summer Music Festival is celebrating its 11th summer of presenting free concerts. The festival is supported by free-will offerings at concerts as well as donations from individuals and businesses, including the Inn at DePauw.

The Kids' Concert Saturday has been made possible by a special gift from Stuart Fabe and Marla Helton of Serendipity Studio.

The Greencastle Music Festival continues on Wednesday, June 17 with a 7:30 p.m. concert in Gobin Methodist Church, featuring violinist Phil Palermo of the Indianapolis Symphony.
