Sunday, June 14, 2015

Childhood obesity rates continue to climb and Indiana is the 22nd most obese state with a 31.5 perent obesity rate for children.

The Purdue Extension Offices of Clay, Monroe, Owen and Putnam counties are providing a one-day training of I am Moving, I am Learning at no cost to childcare providers in centers, homes, ministries and anyone who is interested in attending. The event will take place June 30 at the Clay County YMCA from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

I am Moving, I am Learning (IMIL) is a proactive approach that is scientifically based and provides developmentally appropriate practices for physical activity, music and movement, and nutrition during early childhood.

The three goals of IMIL are to:

* Increase the quantity of time children routinely spend in moderate to vigorous physical activities (MVPA) to meet national guidelines for physical activity.

* Improve the quality of structured movement experiences intentionally facilitated by teachers and adults.

* Improve healthy nutrition choices for children every day.

The following sessions will be offered:

MVPA Every Day -- Do the children in your care get at least 60 minutes of structured MVPA (moderate to vigorous physical activity) every day? Participants will experience MVPA activities that can be replicated with pre-school children.

Take it Outside -- Participants will increase their knowledge of research regarding the benefits of outdoor play and time in nature. Participants will better understand the adult role in facilitating outdoor play, facilitating unstructured/child initiated play in outdoor spaces and preparing outdoor play space.

Teaching Across Cultural Horizons -- Helps providers look at the broad definition of culture and how this impacts interactions with children, families and staff. Providers look at their own culture and learn why they might do what they do.

Moving with the Brain in Mind -- The development of the brain in a child's first five years of life clearly shapes the learning capacity they have for the rest of their life. Learn how the brain structure and functioning can be enhanced through movement and physical activity.

Nutrition Building Blocks -- Early childhood is an optimal time for growth and development. Healthy nutrition is a key for growth and also is a foundation for success in school and life. Learn about way to promote healthy lifestyles by establishing health preferences early in life.

This program is free and open to the public.
