Agriculture safety day set for Tuesday

Monday, June 22, 2015

South Putnam, North Putnam and Cloverdale FFA chapters, with the Putnam County 4-H Junior Leaders, will be presenting an agriculture safety day Tuesday.

The agricultural safety day is being presented in memory of the late Riley Sutherlin.

South Putnam FFA sponsor Amanda King said students have been working to organize this educational event with funds donated through the Riley Memorial Fund.

King said while Sutherlin was a Greencastle High School student, he attended her agriculture class one period a day at South Putnam. Sutherlin was killed last June in a tractor accident on his family farm in rural Greencastle. His parents wanted to give back to the community, so the educational event was formed.

King said there will be several businesses and groups giving free presentations Tuesday, with registration starting at 8:15 a.m. at the Putnam County Fairgrounds. She noted while the event is geared toward educating area youth, it is open to anyone.

"It is open to anyone, especially students in the rural areas," King said.

Presentations will include grain bin operations, chemical safety, electrical safety and more. Those expected to present at the event include Purdue, Co-Alliance, Duke Energy, Monsanto, Greencastle Fire Department, Air Evac, Operation Life, Apache Sprayers and more.

"We've got kids that do a little bit of everything, so we want to touch on a little bit of everything. We also wanted to include some first aid, too," King said. "The point is to get the education out there."

The rotation will begin at 9:30 a.m., with each age group visiting with presenters throughout the day.

She noted lunch will also be free.
