Mike Rokicki Memorial 5K draws 100 runners, walkers
To ignite the start of this year's annual Friends of the Park Association of Putnam County's Celebrate "4" Independence Day Celebration, 100 runners and walkers, along with another 27 participants in the Annual Firecracker Fun Run, took to the streets of Greencastle early Saturday morning, July 4.
Mother Nature provided a beautiful morning and running conditions for the contestants, who began and ended their race in Robe-Ann Park. This year's Mike Rokicki Memorial 5K Run/Walk event was the 24th annual Castle Classic foot race organized by the Greencastle Parks and Recreation Department and sponsored by the Rokicki Foundation.
In the 5K race divisions, Luke Schroer, age 20, Wheaton, Ill., captured the overall 5K run men's champion title with a time of 16:14.
In the women's division of the 5K run, Emma Schroer, age 16, also of Wheaton, emerged as the overall 5K run women's champion with a time of 20:26.
The 5K walk men's champion was 50-year-old David Sillery of Greencastle with a time of 39:55, beating last year's 40:41.
A set of best friends tied for the champion's title in the 5K walk women's divisions. Crossing the finish line with arms linked were Tonya Welker and Joy Pershing with a time of 36:15.
"We would like to congratulate these fleet-footed individuals for a good show to the kickoff event of Greencastle's annual Independence Day Celebration," Parks Director Rod Weinschenk said. "We would also like to give a big thank you to the Rokicki Foundation, Phyllis Rokicki, Ryan Rokicki and their families for again continuing their sponsorship of this favorite Fourth of July event.
"We would also like to thank all of the participants and volunteers who played an important role in making this year's 5K road run and Celebrate '4' festivities a success."
The Greencastle Parks and Recreation Department also extended an early invitation to everyone to mark their calendars for the 25th annual running of the Mike Rokicki Memorial 5K Road Run/Walk set for Monday, July 4, 2016 as we honor the 240th birthday of our great nation.
