Cloverdale school upgrades delayed by rain, storms

CLOVERDALE -- The series of upgrades around Cloverdale Community School Corporation is facing project delays due to the rain, with some of the projects are coming in well under budget.

Project Manager Dan Sulkoske updated school board at Monday's meeting. He said most of the majority of work is outside, and the near daily rain has caused those projects to be pushed back until the weather clears up.

"We have had above average precipitation. It has been delaying every body. It's delaying asphalt. It's delaying any outside work and roof work. If it's outside it's being delayed," Sulkoske stressed.

As for resurfacing all corporation parking lots and drainage projects by the softball field and administration center, at the special meeting in June the board approved roughly a roughly $890,000 contract with Wabash Valley Asphalt. Sulkoske said the project is still coming at the contracted cost. As long as there are no unforeseen issues, the project will be completed at about $100,000 less than the original $1 million budget.

"We want to get all the storm drainage in behind the high school and in the front ... that's our goal, but the weather isn't cooperating," Sulkoske said.

Sulkoske said four bids have been received for the middle school roof upgrade project. The roof is about 20 years old, Linton noted at the last meeting.

The board had anticipated the project to be about $170,000 and Sulkoske said the lowest bid received was about $72,500 from Danco Construction, which also did the roof work on the high school.

The earliest the middle school roof work could be scheduled is mid-September, so Sulkoske said the two-week project would probably be scheduled around fall break.

Sulkoske said bids are being accepted currently for the bus parking lot fences, which will raise the fence to eight-feet tall to help combat future security breaches.

Bids have also come in for the replacement of the old ventilation units at the elementary school, which have caused loss of energy due to drafts coming through the walls. Sulkoske said the school will have options as far as the extent of the project, all of which fall within the $100,000 budget starting at $76,000.

Linton noted the work will begin on the project by addressing the holes, and the remainder of the project options will come before the board. He stressed the focus is to address the loss of energy.

Superintendent Greg Linton noted the renovation of the high school gymnasium floor is currently under way. The project was originally budgeted at $16,000, but has come in at about $20,000.

Linton noted with the other projects coming in way under budget, there is little concern about the cost discrepancy.

In other business:

* Linton said all of the Cloverdale school buses passed inspection with only minor issues that were addressed right away. The two new buses the school purchased out of the bus replacement budget have been delivered and will be inspected next week.

* The board approved the hiring of Morgan Conder as the middle and high school agriculture teacher and FFA adviser and Donovan Jones as high school math teacher.

* The board approved the resignations of Sarah Gore as elementary school teacher; Stacy Artis from high school media center and technology; Jarrod Duff as high school varsity football, baseball and strength/conditioning coach; and Alice Calton from elementary and middle school cafeteria.
