Zella, Logan reign as fair Little Miss, Mr. event returns
On the hottest day of the year, at the hottest part of the day, the Putnam County Fair Little Miis and Mister contest returned after a couple-year layoff.
Maybe it was the youthful age of the cheery contestants or the sweetness in their smiles, but none of the competitors had a meltdown, despite 92-degree weather and 100-percent humidity as the sun beat down on the Dixie Chopper free stage Saturday afternoon at the southwest end of the fairgrounds.
They did, however, melt some hearts.
Zella Boyer, the six-year-old daughter of Ciara and Todd Boyer, Roachdale (North Salem address), captured not only Best Smile but also the overall Putnam County Fair Little Miss title and the sash and tiara that go with it.
Little Zella, a first-grader at Roachdale Elementary, took her title seriously too, already helping out the Putnam County Fair Queen court pass out banners at the Dairy Show Sunday afternoon. Contest organizers had told her Saturday she could help the queens if she wanted to.
The Little Mister title went to Logan Hamm, six-year-old son of Nicole Hamm of Greencastle, who was awarded a crown and scepter. He is a first-grader at Central Elementary.
However, as Second Runner-up Fair Queen Ariel Higgins tried to put the Little Mister crown atop Logan's head, he bobbed and weaved and danced away any actual crowning, preferring to wear his stylish newsboy cap instead. He later relented for the photo op that followed the contest.
Baylee Turner, the seven-year-old daughter of Melissa Turner, Cloverdale, claimed runner-up honors in the Little Miss contest. She is a second-grader at Central Elementary.
There was no runner-up in the Little Mister portion of the event.

Best Personality -- Addyson Elyce Wright, five-year-old granddaughter of Kenneth and Angel Cowans, Greencastle.
Best Hair -- Kierstyn Siara Ronan, six-year-old daughter of Shane and Jeslyn Ronan, Greencastle.
Prettiest Eyes -- Sophia Marie Blanton, six-year-old daughter of Melinda Short, Greencastle.
Best '50s Outfit -- Zhoie Boyer, five-year-old daughter of Ciara and Todd Boyer.
Best Smile -- Zella Boyer.
