County Jail

Four people were booked into the Putnam County Jail recently.

* At 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Jessica Dawn Brattain, 31, Montezuma, was arrested for driving with a suspended license.

At 5:20 p.m. Djamal Aton Eleam, 32, Pittsburgh, was charged with false informing, false identity statement and for a Pennsylvania warrant.

* At 1:18 a.m. Wednesday, James Andrew Stewart, 24, Greencastle, was lodged at the jail on a warrant for possession of marijuana.

At 11 a.m. Sean Patrick McMann, 32, Bainbridge, was booked in on a warrant.

Sheriff's Department

The Putnam County Sheriff's Department responded to five recent property-damage accidents.

* At 3:10 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14, Lois A. Schilling, 40, Cloverdale, was eastbound on U.S. 40, approaching U.S. 231 in a 2011 Jeep Wrangler.

Schilling told Lt. Donnie Pettit she was following a dump truck with "Jarbow" on the side when a rock fell off and hit the lower right corner of her windshield.

Damage was estimated at less than $1,000.

* At 3:55 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14, William E. Samuels, 73, Fillmore, stopped on U.S. 231 at the U.S. 40 intersection in a 2006 Kenworth T800 registered to Ralph Bowling. Sabrina H. Coppedge, 20, Indianapolis, was stopped in front of Samuels in a 2012 Ford sedan.

Samuels told Lt. Pettit he was not sure what happened but his truck rear-ended Coppedge's car.

Coppedge said the light had just turned green and she had not moved when her car was rear-ended.

Damage was estimated at $1,001-$2,500.

* At 11:09 a.m. Sunday, Dekuita L. Steen, 29, Indianapolis, was stopped northbound on U.S. 231 at U.S. 40 in a 2009 Pontiac G6 when she said she was given the green arrow to turn left. As she went through the intersection, Steen's car was struck by a southbound 1999 Chevrolet Blazer driven by Kathy L. Kanakis, 56, Cloverdale.

Kanakis told Sgt. Gregg Slover she had the green light to proceed southbound.

No injuries were reported.

Both vehicles were disabled and towed. Damage was listed at $5,000-$10,000.

* At 1:12 p.m. on Sunday, John B. Beck, 22, Bainbridge, was southbound on County Road 675 East in a 2013 Chevrolet sedan when a deer entered the road.

Beck told Sgt. Slover he swerved to miss the deer and lost control of his car on the west side and left the roadway, entering a ditch and hitting a utility pole.

The car came to back in the road.

No injuries reported.

The vehicle was disabled and towed. Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

* At 4:45 p.m. on Monday, Linsey M. Williams, 29, Roachdale, was northwest bound on U.S. 231 in a 1997 Mercury Sable.

Williams told Capt. Tom Helmer she was trying to negotiate a curve when she applied her brakes and the vehicle failed to turn. The car then slid across the southbound lane, exited the travel portion of the road on the west side and struck the face and end plate of a guardrail.

The car continued to slide northbound into a grass and tree-lined ditch before coming to rest partially in the ditch and road facing west.

Williams received small abrasions to her upper arm, apparently from airbag deployment, but refused medical attention from Operation Life. Two passengers were uninjured.

Capt. Danny Wallace, Deputy Virgil Lanning and the Roachdale Fire Department assisted at the scene.

Damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000.

City Police

One recent property-damage accident was investigated by Greencastle City Police officers.

* At 4:58 p.m. Tuesday, a two-vehicle mishap occurred on Bloomington Street, just south of Veterans Memorial Highway.

Officer Darrel Bunten reported that Gerald Ensor, 75, Greencastle, was driving a 2007 Ford Explorer, owned by the Putnam County Sheriff's Department, attempting to turn north onto Bloomington Street from Keightly Road when another motorist motioned for him to proceed.

As Ensor merged into the roadway, his vehicle collided with a 2014 Honda Civic, driven by Chelsie Pridemore, 24, Rockville, who had pulled out of Martinsville Street to go north. She was moving into the lane that turns west onto Veterans Highway when the collision occurred.

Total damage was listed at $2,500-$5,000.

Cloverdale Police

The Cloverdale Police Department issued three citations recently.

* Angel M. Frederick, 26, Cloverdale,was cited for speeding and expired license plates.

* Justin L. York, 23, Greencastle, was cited for operation of a vehicle without proof of financial responsibility.

* Lance M. Hoopingarner, 33, Brazil, was cited for expired license plates.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department assisted with two medical runs and responded to four other dispatches recently.

* At 11:41 Monday, GFD responded to a power line down at the intersection of Keightly and Cemetery roads. Duke Energy was called to the scene and de-energized the line.

* At 8:57 a.m. Wednesday, GFD assisted with a motor vehicle accident on U.S. 231 on Plessanger's Hill. The department cleaned hydraulic fluid leaking from the truck off the roadway.

* At 2:38 p.m. Wednesday, GFD responded to a fire alarm at 400 S. Locust St. Once on scene the department was disregarded by DePauw University police.

* At 2:46 p.m. Wednesday, GFD investigated a report of a large amount of black smoke at 1108 S. Locust St. The residents were illegally burning furniture in the yard. Along with Greencastle Police, the department informed the residents this was not allowed and the GFD extinguished the fire.
