Salsa contest to heat up Sept. 4 First Friday

Friday, August 21, 2015

The September First Friday event will heat up downtown Greencastle with the county's best salsa.

During its next monthly celebration of music, art and local offerings, Main Street Greencastle will host the second annual Putnam County Salsa Tasting Contest at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 4.

The festivities will take place at the usual spot along Franklin Street north of the Putnam County Courthouse.

Contestants can bring a gallon any kind of salsa they prefer -- spicy or sweet, red or green, chunky or smooth -- by 5:30 p.m. to the salsa tasting booth. Judging will follow at 6 p.m.

Judges will determine the best salsa ($75 cash prize), second place ($60) and third place ($45). The salsa will be judged by taste, appearance and overall impression.

The public will also have chance to choose its favorite salsa entry with the People's Pick. For $10 each, attendees will get to taste each of the offerings, receive a souvenir T-shirt and help determine the $100 people's pick champ as well as the Spirit of Salsa Booth decorarting contest winner ($50 prize) .

The cost for salsa makers to enter the contest is $10 if providing own chips or $15 with chips provided. Pre-registration is required by Friday, Aug. 28. No entries will be accepted on contest day.

On Sept. 4, the salsa makers will serve their own salsa to the public and judges.

Salsa must be homemade and the contest is open to amateurs only -- no professional cooks.
