SPENCER -- An Owen County man died in a single vehicle accident northeast of Spencer on Friday morning.

At 1:52 a.m., a caller reported a single-vehicle accident to Owen County Dispatch off of Texas Pike, just north of Manhattan Road, the Spencer Evening World reported.

Emergency personnel located Michael Carter Jr., 56, Spencer, inside an inverted vehicle off of the roadway.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sgt. Clint Wampler of the Owen County Sheriff's Department said a preliminary investigation revealed that Carter had been traveling northbound on Texas Pike when he went off of the west side of the road and down a steep embankment.

The vehicle struck several trees as it traveled 192 feet before coming to a stop at the bottom of a ravine.

It is currently unknown why Carter left the roadway.

An autopsy was performed Friday at Regional Hospital in Terre Haute to help determine if any medical conditions were a factor in causing the crash.

The results are pending.

Born in Greencastle, Carter was a 1977 graduate of Greencastle High School.

Carter owned and operated Tailgaters BBQ, a popular food truck at local and area fairs and festivals.
