CLOVERDALE -- It was a tough night for the Cloverdale football faithful when county rival Greencastle came looking for its first win of the season on Friday. The Clovers came out firing early in the game but the Tiger Cubs eventually took control of the contest winning 56-6.

"I saw a lot of good improvements," GHS coach Mike Meyer said. "I saw some things. We started meshing on offense. We started some good things on defense. I'm very proud of them. I can't pick out one guy. A lot of guys did a nice job."

The good Greencastle play began early. After an early safety, committed by the Clovers, Greencastle's Nick Costin tossed a long pass to Chase Chew. The early drive was capped by Anthony Rossok, who caught the four-yard touchdown pass from Costin.

Cloverdale struck back when Nick Winders jumped a route and picked off a Costin pass. Cloverdale was able to capitalize on a penalty and Parker Watts connected with Drew Boyette in the end zone.

From there Greencastle turned on the pressure. Chase Chew scored a touchdown on a 10-yard pass.

GHS then picked off a Cloverdale pass to start the second, ending that drive with a Rossok touchdown catch. Making the score 22-6

Greencastle was not done, however, when Devin Clar broke a 76-yard sprint to earn a score.

"They were more fundamentally sound and mentally stronger than we were," Cloverdale coach Tony Meyer said. "It was evident. They were incredibly well coached. Clar is a fantastic running back. He hits the holes hard. We just kept shooting ourselves in the foot. You can only mess up so many times and be competitive."

More miscues on the snap by the Clovers, who were without their starting center, led to easy points for the Tiger Cubs.

Clar scored on another big run, as did Chew.

"This gives us a lot of momentum," Mike Meyer said. "We've got a good football team coming in West Vigo. We've got to get ready for them. We've got our hands full."

Greencastle (1-1) will play the Vikings (2-0) at home while Cloverdale (0-2) will travel to Edgewood (1-1) Friday.
