Illinois teen charged with burglary, auto theft

The third time proved no proverbial charm for an Illinois teenager who walked away from a youth facility but was arrested after allegedly stealing his third escape vehicle from Bainbridge.

Jonas Dwayne Revell, 18, Tuscola, Ill., made his initial appearance in court Wednesday, appearing before Superior Court Judge Denny Bridges on charges of burglary and auto theft. A preliminary plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf.

Revell was charged with entering the garage at the Bainbridge home of Lowell and Patsy McCammack on Aug. 31 and taking their 2002 Buick Rendezvous.

In his 150-mile flight from Springfield, Ill., to Bainbridge, the suspect had the continued misfortune of taking vehicles a little short on fuel.

But unlike the two previous vehicles Revell reportedly made off with and ditched earlier in the day, he wouldn't get away with taking the McCammacks' Buick.

Shortly after backing out of their garage and heading east on U.S. 36, he was spotted and followed by McCammack family members.

Revell was stopped a short time later by Hendricks County Sheriff's Department deputies at U.S. 36 and Dan Jones Road in Avon, ending about a 175-mile escape run.

The suspect was turned over to Bainbridge Marshal Rodney Fenwick, whose probable cause affidavit explained how Revell had made his way from the Jutledge Youth Foundation in Springfield, Ill., along U.S. 36 by first taking a white Mazda in Illinois.

When the Mazda ran out of gas, the suspect reportedly left it along the edge of the highway in Parke County before taking a black 2006 Dodge Charger in Rockville that was almost out of gasoline by the time he entered Bainbridge.

Revell told Marshal Fenwick he left the Charger, owned by Alexandra Chance Christman, Rockville, near the Bainbridge fire station before it ran completely out of fuel and he deposited the car keys in the cup holder.

"I told him he picked nice cars," Fenwick reported saying to the suspect.

The teenager explained that in Bainbridge he saw Patsy McCammack drive down the road and then pull into her garage at 107 Northfield Drive. He reportedly entered the unlocked side door of the garage and disengaged the automatic door opener so it would not make noise when he raised the garage door, and drove off with the Buick.

McCammack discovered the car missing when she went to retrieve her glasses from the vehicle while making lunch.

Revell, who was reportedly on probation in Illinois, was lodged in the Putnam County Jail.
