Jennings and Hopson perform Franz Schubert's landmark song cycle, "Die schöne Müllerin," based on poems of Wilhelm Müller, as Aures completes the puzzle with dramatic readings of the unset prologue, epilogue and three poems from Müller's original writings about the young miller and the fair miller-maid. Join them for this timeless story.

DePauw University Orchestra--Orcenith Smith, music director

Sunday, Sept. 20

3 p.m.

Green Center, Kresge Auditorium

The DePauw University Orchestra begins the new academic year with several points of artistic inspiration. Beginning with the recent campus visit by the conductorless orchestra, A Far Cry, the concert opens with a "conductorless" performance of the overture to Mozart's opera The Abduction from the Seraglio, providing an avenue into the students' new 21st Century Musician curriculum, as they investigate new pathways for classical music in society. Featured on the program will be Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5. Written during the oppressive years of the Stalin regime, the piece provides a powerful viewpoint on music's capacity to sound the fear of backlash from the regime, while also generating triumphant hope for the future.
