Eagles win first, second at Clay City Invitational

CLAY CITY -- South Putnam proved Thursday that an eagle's wheelhouse includes more than flying.

The girls' cross country team took first overall in the Clay City Invitational Thursday while the boys finished in second place.

Earning 36 total points, the Lady Eagles were led by Maddie McHugh, finishing sixth overall with a time of 22:53. Finishing shortly after McHugh in seventh place (second place for the Eagles) was Julianna DeLano with a time of 23:17.

Shakamak followed South Putnam with 42 points, trailed by Owen Valley (44), White River Valley (113), Linton (133) and Clay City (no team score).

Finishing in eighth and ninth places were South's Ally Nichols and Rachel Jones, who earned times of 23:34 and 23:40 respectively to finish out the top 10 for the Eagles.

Alex Fanning (17th), Addi Blaydes (24th) and Samara Young (25th) earned times of 25:21, 26:39 and 27:24, respectively, for the Eagles.

Shakamak's Liz Bredeweg and Clay City's Alexis Laswell took the top two spots on the girls' side with respective times of 20:18 and 20:39.

The boys, who finished in second place overall with 58 points, were driven by Keiffer Vittetow's 17:22 performance, enough to earn him second place overall. Logan Vandermark wrapped up the top 10 results for South's boys with a time of 18:56.

Other South Putnam times include Michael Crossman (11th), Lorenzo Mainetti (17th), Austin Rumley (22nd) and Eric Hinkle (31st) with times of 19:16, 20:02, 20:25 and 21:40, respectively.

Both the boys and girls will travel to Indianapolis on Saturday for the Ben Davis Invitational beginning at 9:30 a.m.
