DANVILLE -- South Putnam tennis has seen a sluggish start to the season, but that all may change as the tide began rolling in favor of the Eagles Monday at Danville.

Taking the match by a team score of 4-1, South Putnam saw both its number two and three singles players come away with a victory.

The doubles teams, not to be outdone, won both of their matchups against Danville.

Eagles head coach Zach Love said he was impressed by some of the younger players on Monday.

"Overall, (I'm) very happy with how the team played," Love said. "Thomas Fanning played really well at number three singles (and) Garrett Heavin and Hunter Croan were really strong at number two doubles."

Strong, they were.

Although senior Eagle Josh Stewart lost in two sets by scores of 6-1 and 6-0, sophomore Noah Emmerick mounted a second-set comeback in the number two-position, winning over his Danville counterpart by scores of 3-6, 7-5 and 6-3, followed by freshman Fanning with scores of 6-1 and 6-0.

"Emmerick played as well as he has all season at number two singles," Love said. "He lost the first set and was down 1-5 in set two. He went on to win six straight games to take the second (and) then continued his momentum into the third."

In doubles, seniors Dylan Drawbaugh and Jacob Lorimer took the number one-position victory with scores of 6-3 and 7-6 to defeat their Warrior foes in two sets.

"Drawbaugh and Lorimer played really well in set one and got off to a good start in set two," Love said about his number one doubles team. "They were (then) able to clinch it in a tiebreaker."

In the number two doubles position, freshman Garrett Heavin and sophomore Hunter Croan won in two sets by scores of 6-2 and 6-2.

"Hopefully we can use this momentum to continue to improve these last couple weeks prior to sectionals," Love said.

The South Putnam Eagles boys' tennis team will be back in court Thursday when they host the visiting Athenians from Crawfordsville at 4:45 p.m.
