Two drivers to hospital following crash on Waterworks Hill

Thursday, October 1, 2015

Two people were injured Thursday morning in a pair of accidents on Waterworks Hill.

An initial one-vehicle accident left a minivan disabled in the road, which resulted in a truck T-boning the disabled vehicle.

At approximately 7 a.m., Paula Gaddis, 47, Bainbridge, was northbound on U.S. 231 in a gray minivan when she lost control for an unknown reason.

The van collided with the guardrail on the east side of the road, ending up sideways in the northbound lane, facing west.

Deputy Anthony Brown and Lt. Donnie Pettit of the Putnam County Sheriff's Department were unsure of the reason for the initial crash because Gaddis lost consciousness in the later incident.

With the van still sideways in the road, some passersby had stopped to help. However, Andrew Thomas, 54, Rockville, was northbound in a 1996 GMC Sierra and failed to stop in time, colliding with the driver's side front fender of the van.

The truck ended up in a yard on the west side of the road.

Gaddis, who lost and then regained consciousness, was transported to Hendricks Regional Hospital by Operation Life for the treatment of a leg injury and other possible injuries.

Thomas initially said he did not need treatment, but ultimately decided to seek treatment for an arm injury. Operation Life also transported him from the scene.

Lt. Dwight Simmons also assisted at the scene, as did the Greencastle Fire Department.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene. Damage was estimated at more than $10,000.

  • If the drivers side was hit what happened to the passengers side. What I see in this picture is the passenger side, not the drivers side.
