Donald Eugene Lawrence

Nov. 1, 1934 -- Oct. 4, 2015

My life revolved around three women--my wife, Helen, and daughters Cynde and Cheri. What can I say -- how lucky was I? Married 60 years to the same woman -- started out as a blind date -- and every moment magical-- how lucky was I?

Then, my world was suddenly filled with two little girls, Cynde and Cheri-and pin curls, Barbie dolls, dresses, frilly socks and ...boyfriends, which eventually led to Cheri marrying Eugene Grable, having three sons, Jared (Kelly), Bradley (Heather) and Ryan (Joel) and Cynde marrying Skip Frederick and having Nicholas, Angela (Russ) and Anthony. And these grandchildren and their wonderful spouses gave me great-grandchildren (Whew!) -- Kayleen, Brayden, and Addison (Jared), Cooper and Corbin (Bradley), Abbey (Ryan), Elle, and Hunter, and baby-soon-to-be (Nichalas), and Victoria and Grant (Angela). Again-how lucky was I?

I worked at IBM and retired, after more than 30 years, then began a second career chapter as a locksmith -- always learning something new. Along the way during these two careers, I installed carpet and flooring in many homes. Most people know me as the "cookie baker," sharing goodies with many friends and loved ones.

Of course, fishing and shooting were other great passions of my life, often instructing my daughters, grandchildren, and great grandchildren on the finer points -- how to bait a hook or shoot straight. How lucky was I?

I didn't know a stranger-- I think I knew everyone for miles around -- it's amazing what you learn from talking and listening. How lucky was I?

Whether I was dancing the wipeout at the Elks with my girls, watching my grandchildren play ball or attending birthday parties or just telling bad jokes-- How lucky was I?

Some people may think life is too short -- and it is -- but along the way if you love, live and laugh-isn't that what it's all about anyway? How lucky was I?

I will be having a social gathering Saturday, Oct. 17 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home, Greencastle. Please come and visit a while.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory to the American Lung Assn., 115 W. Washington St., Ste 1180-,S Indianapolis, IN. 46204
