CLOVERDALE -- Cloverdale Middle School was the recipient of more than $2,000 in donations from Walmart Transportation Thursday.

Area Manager Todd Stoltey presented a check for $1,145.82 to CMS for the Safe Miles for Education program. He explained for each safe mile driven out of the Greencastle, one cent is dedicated to the program -- up to $5,000 -- and donated to area schools.

Stoltey explained each year the employees nominate an area school to be the recipient, then a drawing decides to which school the money is donated.

In addition, each Cloverdale Middle School teacher was awarded a gift card, totaling $1,000.

"It is estimated every teacher spends between $500 and $1,000 out of their own pocket in the classroom. Walmart would like to make that easier," Stoltey said.

A group of excited teachers were gathered in the middle school library for the presentations.

Middle School Principal Dawn Tucker was excited on behalf of the teachers and noted it is not every day a small school gets more than $2,000 in donations in one day.

"We didn't know we would be getting the Safe Miles for Education donation today, so that was an added bonus," Tucker said.

She added, "Educators in general spend a lot of money out-of-pocket, and this will allow them to buy even more materials."

The gift cards were presented to CMS team leaders, who then distributed them to the teachers in each department.

Tucker encourages everyone in the community to support the local Walmart because it continues to back area schools and their programs.
