Cloverdale strugles early, can't finish comeback bid

MARSHALL -- The CHS girls' basketball team was little sluggish at the start of the season and couldn't overcome a tough first-quarter and lost its opening road game against Turkey Run 49-38.

Cloverdale only scored three points in its opening quarter while Turkey Run netted 16.

"We started out slow tonight. You could tell there was some rust there," Clover coach Matt Langdon said. "Almost every girl is playing different positions and rotations this year so it may take some time for the girls to get used to playing together."

CHS played par for par with Turkey Run in the other three quarters, actually outscoring the Warriors in the fourth. But CHS couldn't make up the ground given up in the first.

"We saw some really good things in the fourth quarter," Langdon said. "Intensity on defense was much better. We will be patient and look to steadily improve as the year goes along."

Abby Walker was the leading scorer for Cloverdale with 17 points. Tori Combs had 9.

The JV won 33-17. CHS' next game is Friday at Riverton Parke.
