Land Leases workshops planned Nov. 9

Thursday, November 5, 2015

A farm lease is an agreement between tenant and landlord that directs how both parties will share economic returns and obligations to produce and harvest the crops raised.

Creating a farm lease that is fair to both tenant and landlord is typically the goal of both parties: Landlords desire a fair return on their real estate investment and tenants desire to earn net income from cropping activities. Both parties share in maintaining stewardship of the property.

In November Purdue Extension will offer programs in both Putnam and Clay counties to provide landlords with a basic understanding of the current agriculture climate and how it might impact their land leases in the future.

The Land Lease for Landlords workshop will take place Monday, Nov. 9 at the Clay County Fairgrounds in Brazil from 1-3 p.m. The same program will be available to those who prefer an evening program at the Putnam County Fairgrounds in Greencastle on Monday, Nov. 9 from 6-8 p.m.

Advance registration is requested by calling 653-8411 (Putnam County) or 812-448-9041 (Clay County).

Program resources should provide benefits to landlords who are thinking about negotiating their current and future land leases with tenants. Program outline includes the current agriculture climate and how it will impact land leases, types of land leases, legal issues and why a handshake isn't enough.

Extension Educators Jenna Nees, from Putnam Extension, and Summer Long, from Clay/Owen Extension, will conduct the workshops.

Goals of the workshop are to assist landlords in identifying issues important to their leasing activities and provide resources from Purdue Extension to assist in making the farm lease fair and sustainable for both tenant and landlord.

Questions concerning the programs may be directed to Jenna Nees at 653-8411, or by e-mail at smith535@purdue.edu or by contacting Summer Long at 812-448-9041 or by e-mail at sumlong@purdue.edu.
