GCSC holds public meeting Nov. 23

The Greencastle School Corporation, having recently decided to move forward with plans to seek the purchase of 30 acres adjacent to The Woods Edge subdivision, is holding a community meeting on Monday, Nov. 23 to hear feedback from the surrounding community.

This community meeting, according to a press release by the corporation, is "for residents of Woods Edge subdivision and surrounding property owners to discuss the potential building of a transportation facility."

The acreage in question will potentially be used for a new transportation facility for the school corporations buses, utility vehicles and mechanic's area(s).

The Monday meeting will take place within the library of Greencastle Middle School at 7 p.m.

  • Why would you possibly need 30 acres for a Bus Facility? Plainfield and Avon are multiple times bigger than Greencastle and they sure don't have 30 acres at either of their Bus facilities. Avon has it's facility just off SR267 and though I'm no expert I would say it is less than 5 acres.

  • I do live in the residential area of Wood's Edge and do see the need for a better placement of a new bus barn and extra room for repair garages and other city/county buildings. My concerns include the coming expansion of housing areas all around Greencastle to keep up with the building of many new homes for those people who work in Indianapolis but prefer to live in our small town environment. We will soon need an expanded Fire Department building, and the Police Department needs a more secure building and more secure fencing around it, just as the city services needs to grow it's personnel and fleet of construction and maintenance vehicles. My immediate interest are what roads will these busses use to get onto Martinsville street and Zinc Mill road? There are currently three street ends that run through the residential parts of Wood's Edge that butt up to the proposed property and if the traffic is to increase through these then the property values will decrease and the danger to pedestrians goes up. E Co Rd 200 S borders the south side of the small field and would not interrupt traffic or negatively affect the local residents if the only entrances were placed on it. What I question is "WHY DOES THE CITY MANAGEMENT WANT TO PURCHASE MORE PRIME RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY WHEN IT ALREADY OWNS SO MUCH OPEN LAND AROUND TOWN NOW THAT IT IS DOING NOTHING WITH AND COLLECTING NO TAXES ON?" With this single question you must look at all of the land the city already owns and ask why not there? Years ago when the town decided to seize land and build a "Speculation" building that no company had an interest in, we saw a waste of our taxes we had paid and future taxes for several years while it sat empty. Granting the Ethanol Plant 20 years of tax abatement did nothing for us, as it employed a few locals in construction and guard positions while importing a huge crew to build it and then leave. Even when the Mayor and town council were rebuilding the Percy Julian Dr. in front of our middle and High schools they waited too long to get the construction crew started and the rebuilding went on into the new school year, inconveniencing hundreds of local residents and students. How will they respond to the needs for more road rebuilding in the close area after they begin this? By saving taxes every year until it is necessary to rebuild them or by taking out a HUGE MULTI-YEAR LOAN at the last minute, again? Have you considered north of town, where we shall soon need another water tower? Or purchasing the acreage just South of Wal-mart's warehouse, as this already has road frontage that is heavily used by trucks and would blend well with the area.

  • Yes, I agree that there are surely other properties more suited for this purpose. The old Jones School site came to my mind when I first read this story. I do not think it is wise to take real estate that is more suited for residential development.
