DePauw women fall to 1-1 after loss

WILMINGTON , Ohio - Franklin's Lauren DeSutter hit two free throws with 12 seconds left and those provided the winning margin as the Grizzlies topped No. 15 DePauw, 57-55, in the second game of Wilmington College's Damon's/Hampton Inn Tip-Off Classic Friday Night . Both teams moved to 1-1 on the season. DePauw faces Mount St. Joseph at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The Grizzlies outscored the Tigers 12-4 over the final 3:24 after DePauw held a 51-45 lead. Franklin's Kelsey Smith hit a layup with 41 seconds left to give the Grizzlies a 55-53 lead before Maya Howard hit a jumper with 23 seconds left to even the score.

DeSutter's two free throws gave Franklin the lead before the teams exchanged turnovers and Franklin was whistled for a foul with one second remaining. DePauw's Claire Ryan was unable to convert at the line and the Grizzlies controlled the rebound and earned the win.

Franklin hit a pair of threes in the opening 53 seconds and held an 8-0 lead on the way to an 11-7 lead after the first quarter before DePauw closed the gap to 22-19 at the half.

DePauw closed the third quarter with a 9-1 run to move from a 36-30 deficit to a 39-37 lead at quarter break. The Tigers scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter to expand the lead to 47-37 before Franklin mounted its comeback.

Howard led the Tigers with 15 points, while Morgan Skordos added 10. Ryan finished with six rebounds and five steals.

DeSutter led Franklin with 13 points with Katie Brewer and Kayle Comer each scoring 12. Brewer grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double.

The Tigers shot 44.4 percent from the field to Franklin's 36.4 percent, but DePauw committed 23 turnovers and was outrebounded 32-30.
