John Richard Long, 91, of Greencastle, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2015.

Born July 8, 1924 in Greencastle, he was the son of Wallace O. and Meda E (Dodd) Long.

He was a 1942 graduate of Greencastle High School and had taken classes at Indiana University.

He married Ellen Jane Long on Feb. 7, 1952.

He served in the United States Navy Air Corps during World War II.

John worked at the U.S. Post Office and sold specialty advertising for more than 60 years.

He was a member of the Jaycees, Kiwanis, Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and VFW, and served on the Putnam County Hospital Board for 25 years.

He was a former member of the First Christian Church and was currently a member of Gobin Memorial UMC.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen Jane Long; children Janet Long Correll, Jerry F. Long and Julie A. (Steve) Vanderbosch; a half-sister, Diane Weeks; seven grandchildren, Josh, Ben, Maggie, Lindsey, Cody, Katie and Hannah; and two great-grandchildren, Jaxon and Hallie.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Emily Shonkwiler and Libby Pierce and a half-brother, Ron Long.

Funeral services will be conducted at noon on Tuesday, Dec. 1 at Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home, Greencastle. Interment, with military rites, will follow at Fillmore Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. Tuesday until time of service at the funeral home.
